Curbside Chronicle's
Tastes Like Home

Illustrations for an Oklahoma City based award-winning street paper

“Tastes Like Home is Curbside’s way for vendors to share about meals that remind them of home. Our hope is to show everyone that no matter your station in life, we all have a lot in common. Especially when we’re gathered around a dining room table.”

In May of 2021, Curbside Chronicle started a new column to feature vendors and their fond food memories.

Since Curbside’s founding in 2013, more than a million copies of this street paper have been sold, creating an alternative to panhandling for the unhoused. Working under the Homeless Alliance, it’s helped more than 380 to secure housing, build relationships, develop money and time management skills, and to have a voice.

Included here is a cover for the Tastes Like Home issue I created, as well as some of the interior spreads throughout the years. They feature my food and portrait illustrations, each including an interview with the vendor and recipe.

Challenge

Creating a consistent illustration style and feel for the column every issue.

What I Did
  • Established the style of semi-realistic plated scenes, bright colors, bold linework and a slight paper texture.

  • Illustrated the cover for the July 2022 Issue around the theme.

  • Illustrated 15 different foods and vendors so far (found in the "food" and "people" illustration categories).

  • Helped make it an award-winning segment.
